If you understood the title of this, than you know I’m going to be talking about tempo. More specifically dragging (dragon) and rushing (Russian). There is never really a time when you should being doing either of these things, and I think that they often get mixed up with playing in front of or behind the beat. When you are playing ahead of or behind the beat, you still have a solid, unchanging sense of where one is, as opposed to dragging or rushing, when you actually quicken or slow down the tempo. As a drummer the most important thing should be the tempo, so dragging and rushing are habits that must be eliminated.
